Rumor: Microsoft to Retroactively Extend Warranties to 1 Year

With my experience with my XBox 360/GoW issues, I am not surprised if this turns out to be true.  The rumor is that starting tomorrow, all 360's will have their warantees extended to one year.  Check it out here.

UPDATE: Its official now.  As seen on http://www.xbox.com!

Comments:

They really need to change some things in their hardware design. I've seen lots of complaints about hardware failures on the net.

With the PS3 coming out, and the rave reviews the hardware experts have given it, it should have much higher reliability than the XBOX 360. Microsoft needs to address this issue with a redesign, not merely an extended warranty!

The XBox is going to be changed soon to include a smaller die size for their processors which might help with the heat issues.

On the other hand, while the hardware people might like the PS3 (which I haven't seen, especially in light of the PS1 & 2 aliasing problems and the upscaling failures), I think the Wii has certainly won the 2nd battle of the next gen war. Its a long war though, so we'll have to see how it really figures out.

In general, I think hardware failures are overblown on all the consoles (do a YouTube search and you'll see tons of videos on all three platforms of failures and claims of class-action lawsuits and such). Its the call of Fanboys. I don't believe that warrantee extension is just about hardware problems, but more to be in line with other consoles.
