Observations at VSLive

I finished my talks today at VSLive. I am very impressed with the conference. I have never been before. The conference facilities and hotel are exceptional. Much kudos goes to Fawcette for putting together such a great conference.

I love getting to speak to people using ADO.NET and see how they are using the tools. It seems that there is some difference of opinion between what other ADO.NET writers/speakers are teaching about DataSets. I would love to do a panel discussion sometime with some of the other writers to investigate the different opinions.

My presentation and example code will be up here when it's ready.

Comments:

I attended your presentations on ADO at the conference. They were excellent. Your way of presenting is clear and concise. Nice job.

I agree completely - the facility and conference itself (and even the Orlando weather) was exceptional.

You may remember I was the one asking you questions about the difference in opinion between you and Rocky. On my evaluation form I included a recommendation for a kind of panel discussion or debate forum as you mention. I think that would make a great conference even better, and could include a few different topics:

Datasets vs. Business objects
Windows forms vs. ASP.NET
Remoting vs. Web services

I agree with you entirely. I was hoping that I would find a consensus of sorts on whether databinding was finally up to par and it seems like it is still split. The demo's that I see just don't touch on real life. It is very rarely that I can get a result set that is from a single table. There always seems to be a lookup table or some other piece of information that make the demos useless. I have a hard time believing that Microsoft could produce a product like Outlook or Project Manager using databinding but who knows.
